FEB. 26
On February 21 at 11:00 a.m., the exhibition Sguardi sull’Africa. Le fotografie di Tito e Sandro Spini nelle collezioni CSAC, curated by Alessandra Acocella and Alessandro Ferraro, will open at CSAC – Centro Studi e Archivio della Comunicazione of the University of Parma. Organized as part of the PRIN PNRR 2022 project Straniere: the reception of non-European arts and cultures in Italy (1945- 2000), the exhibition presents previously unpublished materials related to the field research and photographic work carried out by Tito and Sandro Spini in Mali during the 1970s and 1980s, a crucial period in the development of ethnographic and visual studies on West Africa.
The collection, preserved in the Photography Section and acquired by CSAC in the late 1970s through a donation from Sandro Spini, comprises sixty-one prints documenting the journeys undertaken by the two photographer-anthropologists – both trained as architects – among the Bozo and Dogon communities. Alongside the photographic works, a substantial body of documentary materials will also be on display, including correspondence, invitations, contact sheets, reviews, and critical essays devoted to their work. Together, these materials make it possible to reconstruct comprehensively the context of their research and the working methods of the two authors.
We look forward to welcoming you!
