WE DON’T NEED NO EDUCATION

The Education of the Artist and for the Artist from 1900 to the Present

The second issue of Senzacornice Journal. Studi sul sistema dell’arte contemporanea / Studies on the contemporary art system, edited by Raffaele Bedarida, explores the histories, theories, and practices around the education of and for artists: how has the history of art schools (accademie d’arte in Italy) and their pedagogical approach shaped or expressed what an artist must know and do? What kind of art history has been taught in art schools, and how has it related to the art history taught in universities? What kinds of knowledge and pedagogical models for the training of artists have emerged, prevailed, and declined over time? How has the Italian educational system, in comparison with other countries, created a national specificity, with its strengths and weaknesses? How have teaching activities and art practices been intersected, both before and after the so-called “educational turn” of the last thirty years?

Possible, though not exclusive, themes of investigation could include:

  • History of art schools, pedagogical theories, and teaching aimed at artists
  • The teaching of art history in art schools and universities
  • Artists who teach and the role of teaching in their art practice
  • The training of artists compared to the training of other professional figures
  • Teaching as an integral part of art practice
  • The relationship between pedagogical theories and artistic discourse
  • The role and impact of artists in art-history teaching and scholarship
  • Italian models and those from other countries in a comparative and transnational approach
  • Other spaces and tools for the training of artists outside the art schools
  • Educational migration: for example, the training of foreign artists in Italy and of Italians abroad
